1. Monetary Wiz
It's not enough to simply read amounts. Your accountant should be able flit through your balance sheet, to sit back on your first visit and give you an instant and accurate reading of the state of your business. Grab your hat, if on first visit they can not do this and make for the door! You need direct and honest guidance and a fantastic accountant can almost feel amounts and business health. They can do it nicely and they can do it immediately.
2. Big and Little Image Thinker
This is vital. A great accountant understands the detail of your financial statements. This really is what all accountants are trained to do. But a great accountant goes beyond book balancing and conceptualises and grasps the international or structural strengths and weaknesses of your financial situation. They give you a roadmap of guidance on how to get there and see and develop excellent outcomes for the business.
3. Have They Grown Their Own Company?
What is the state of their own business? Could it be in good shape? This does not mean they've created a corporation, but what it does mean is they have a great running business or company that is healthy and profitable. Have they taken risks? Are they progressive and proactive? Are they in step with the times? Do they employ modern technologies? These are great indicators. Take note if this is occurring and if it is, you may be in the right spot. If not, find a beanie who is doing just that!
4. Great Communication
Does your cpa adhere to account - talk or do they follow best practise plain English as part of their communications policy with clients? Are communications labored and laboured or simplified so there's clarity and mutual understanding? You've let's know this is among the single most important qualities to you personally. Customers tell us they want good, plain, bright help. They don't need to hear about academic theories on the growth of taxation legislation in NZ over the past thirty years!
5. What Sort of Team Does Your Accountant Have?
A great accountant is not afraid to fire team players who aren't performing for you, the client. An incredible accountant will keep trying to find key team players who bring to a fantastic job. They go above and beyond to source team members who deliver not merely a set of financials, but quality financials that maximise your return honestly and ethically without cutting corners. There isn't any sloppy at Slaters. It's all about a terrific team. From Tina (our just brilliant front of house reception person) through to Harsha, (the leader of our Financials Team) and Beth and Shareena. Fantastic staff - longstanding members over many years - great people who work well together for the team and customer.
6. Understands a Good Business Model.
It's not about a set of financials. An incredible accountant allows you to develop an extremely good, complete business model over many years. We are proud to say we have clients who've been with us 25 years plus some of these have been challenged to grow and flourish their businesses even when it is been painful! The ones who've stuck with our large picture plans reap the benefits. If your accountant does not help you develop a healthy, longterm business model, have a think about moving on.
7. Are They Easy to Work With?
Up front payments and clear prices? And we don't mean "bundling packages." We determined against these some years ago in favour of greater transparency. A clear, fixed price that one can pay off or pay in one fell swoop. (Bundling is a monthly payment that can eek away in the background without you ever totally accessing the full deal. It is a confusion for clients since they're locked in to their package and can't ever really get anything beyond their bundle without paying extra bucks. We do not do that. Not transparent enough for Slaters and we've seen it eventuate into relationship dislocation between partner and client.) Simple to make a consultation? How about hidden costs? Are there annoying and hourly rates that are sneaky concealed somewhere in the fine print? A fantastic accountant is totally transparent about costs and is also very accessible. They are easy to keep in touch with and come back to you personally immediately via free assemblies, phone calls or email. At Slaters you are able to even pop in and catch Brett and Brad on the hop, for no extra price. That's ease!
This can be a biggie. Clients have reported that they're actually more comfortable having an accountant who's NOT out and about at every social function and gathering. You have told us a fantastic accountant isn't boozing it up at the bar and letting loose with your private financial issues. There's a code of ethics to adhere to, which needs to be taken very, very seriously. A fantastic cpa understands they're dealing with their families and honours and the financial heart and soul of their customers that information accordingly.
These are just a couple of the key elements you must look for when sourcing an excellent accountant. We hope it helps you. And remember, if you are looking to change beanies or locate one that can really help you, do not hesitate to email us in at the office on email@example.com . You can also book a free appointment online here . Make an appointment and talk with Brett about improving your financial future. It's free once you speak with Brett, and odds are you'll come on board with Slaters.
